Prepped is a personalized digital program that provides tools and training to help you improve your job search skills so you can increase your chances of landing a job.
Backed by science and designed by HR pros, Prepped breaks down your job search into learning modules, short videos, and simple exercises to help you amp up your interviewing and networking skills. We also have free resume, cover letter, and email templates, and recently launched a resume optimizer tool to make your resume more impactful (and more likely to get in the hands of a hiring manager), as well as an AI-powered interview feedback tool to help you ace your interviews.
Having a resume is great starting point in your job search, but it's only a piece of the bigger job search puzzle. Prepped's approach to the job search is to teach you valuable job search skills and offer strategic tools to increase your chances of finding a job.
Prepped is designed with students and new grads in mind, but we think our program is also applicable to anyone looking to switch jobs or progress in their career. It's never too late to improve or get a refresh on your job search skills!
Prepped offers 3 plans including Prepped Basic (a free plan), Prepped Premium ($9.99/month) and Prepped Premium Plus ($24.99/month). Explore each plan here.
There's a ton of career advice out there. And a lot of it is good. But it's hard to know what is most impactful. That's why we've poured through peer reviewed academic research to recommend skills and job search strategies that are empirically proven to make a difference. This helps you spend your precious time and energy on strategies with the most impact.
"Peer reviewed" means that before being published, the research has been assessed by other academics to make sure it's rigorous. And we don't rely on any one study. Instead, one of the most important sources that informs our program is a "meta-analysis" of job search behaviours. A meta-analysis is an analysis of analyses; it involves doing a research study on research studies. A meta-analysis is powerful because it aggregates all the (rigorous) studies on a topic and averages them, putting more weight on studies with more subjects.
We've reflected strategies and skills recommended in this large meta-analysis in our program, along with findings from other fields like behavioural economics. So, you can follow the Prepped program with confidence knowing that we've done, and will continue to do, the hard work of understanding which job search skills you should focus on and which job search strategies are most helpful to help increase your likelihood of better results.
The 2014 meta-analysis by Liu, Huang, and Wang in the Psychological Bulletin covered almost 50 global experimental and quasi-experimental studies in job search across several decades. Especially important is the fact that experimental studies test hypotheses using the scientific method – these researchers compared an experimental group (people who learned a specific job search skill, or used a certain behaviour) and a control group (people who didn't) to look for differences in outcomes.
The studies included in the meta-analysis reflect a total of over 10,000 people. The larger a dataset, the more confidence we have in the results – and we can also control for factors like age, or gender, or location, so that we can best isolate the cause (e.g. a job search skill or behaviour) and effect (e.g. finding a job). It is the amazing statistical power of large datasets like this – where we can isolate interventions and predict outcomes with strong degrees of certainty – that make the study of human behaviour a science!
LEARN JOB SEARCH SKILLS: People who are taught job search skills, and how to present themselves well in interviews and networking, are 3x more likely to get a job.
PRACTICE: People who boosted their confidence with strategies like practice and role-playing were 3x more likely to get a job.
GET PROACTIVE: People who are proactive in their job search – like reaching out to companies to actively enquire about potential positions, following up with leads and asking for referrals, and widening their search to include multiple types of roles – are 6x more likely to get a job.
SET GOALS: People who set specific, measurable career goals are 5x more likely to get a job.
LEVERAGE YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK: People who ask friends and family for help and leverage their peer networks for help and advice are 4x more likely to get a job.
An advantage to using meta-analyses is that by reviewing decades of research we can be more confident that the results are more likely to stand the test of time. Indeed, the latest research we've read continues to reinforce these findings. So, while we at Prepped will continue to stay on top of the latest research to watch for any changes – particularly how new technologies in the job search space may disrupt and make changes more quickly – we know that the size and scale of research we've used to inform our program allow us to recommend the effective strategies and skills with confidence. Prepped is based on evidence, not fads.
The STAR story is a framework designed to help you structure your answers to interview questions in the most effective way possible.
Situation: Provide the background for your story. (E.g. What was the environment, who were the players involved)
Task: Describe your responsibility in the situation. (E.g. What was being asked of you/what did you need to do?)
Action: Describe how you completed the task. (E.g. What exactly you did to manage the situation by showcasing your skills and capabilities)
Result: Explain the outcome and what your key learnings were (include metrics wherever possible).
